UG PHYSICS LAB Established in 2003 the undergraduate laboratory for B.Sc students is equipped with several experiments in different branches in Physics. Laboratory work is a very important part of a course in General Physics. It reinforces the student’s understanding of fundamental concepts and principles while, at the same time, helping the student to develop their skill in carrying out scientific measurements. It is designed in such a way that the students can understand the basics of Physics through hands on experiments |

Abstract [+]
Morphology and properties of ceramics are first attributes of synthesis techniques and sitering temperature. In order to understand the effect of synthesis techniques and sintering temperature 0.55(Ba0.9Ca0.1)TiO3-0.45Ba(Sn0.2Ti0.8)O3(BCT-BST) is synthesized by solid state reaction (SSR), sol-gel method and molten-salt methods. The cubic crystal structure of all the synthesized BCT-BST is confirmed by X-ray powder diffraction analysis. Densification temperature varies between 1250 oC and 1400 oC depending on the synthesis technique. The morphology and particle size of each of BCT-BST is studied using scanning electron microscope. Particle size is found to be in the range of 32nm to 60nm. Dielectric studies on each of BCT-BST are carried out as a function of temperature and frequency. The morphotropic phase boundary is noticed at 71oC and a high dielectric constant of 18000 noticed for sol gel synthesized BCT-BST. A soft ferroelectric hysteresis curve is exhibited by each of BCT-BST. |

Abstract [+]
This work describes the straightforward solvothermal microwave irradiation approach utilized to create pure and variable quantities of Fe doped CuO nanoparticles, as well as the experimental methods used to characterize their structural properties. The chemical, physical, and structural features of the nanoparticles were characterized using a wide variety of methods. The crystal structure, lattice properties, and crystallite size of the pure and Fe-doped CuO nanoparticles produced were confirmed by powder X-ray diffraction investigation. Analyzing the produced nanoparticles using Energy Dispersive X-ray Absorptiometry confirmed their atomic percentage and stoichiometry. The band gap and absorption were calculated from the items’ measured UV–visible spectra. Photoluminescence tests confirmed the materials’ stated green emission. Surface morphology and nanoparticles quality is assessed by SEM. Transmission electron microscopy can assess particle size and dispersion. The temperature dependence of the dielectric characteristics of nanoparticles was studied. It has been shown that CuO nanoparticles, both undoped and Fe-doped possess applications like power generation, circuitry, telecommunication, optical and photovoltaic device. |

A nonlinear optical single crystal of sodium sulfanilate dihydrate (SSDH) is formed using the slow evaporation solution approach. Using X-ray diffraction, the properties of the unit cell are extracted from a single crystal. Using UV-Vis-NIR spectroscopy, the optical transmittance of crystals is determined. Mechanical toughness is evaluated using a Vickers micro hardness test. Sodium sulfanilate dihydrate is synthesized as a single crystal and etched for analysis. Photoacoustic spectroscopy is used to examine the sample's thermal diffusivity. The crystal's thermophysical properties are vital for every element of heat transfer incidences, in addition to being employed in many other applications, including as Nd:YAG lasers, Nd:YLF lasers, acousto-optics, and microelectronics industry applications. |

Photoacoustic technique has emerged as one of the foremost methods for the accurate measurement of thermophysical parameters for a wide range of solid materials. This technique has been used to study the non-linear optical (NLO) single crystal of benzil (BZ) which have been grown in both slow evaporation solution technique (SEST) and Sankaranarayanan-Ramasamy (SR) technique. The grown crystals are found to be of good quality; single crystals have been put under the investigations of single crystal X-ray diffraction (XRD) and photoacoustic (PA) effect. PA study can be utilised to find out a few thermophysical parameters such as thermal conductivity, thermal diffusivity and thermal effusivity. The observed value of thermal diffusivity for benzil crystal is found to be superior to few other familiar NLO materials so that it emerges out to be possessed with an advantage which can be utilised for NLO applications. The grown crystal has also been utilised for dielectric analysis for various temperatures. The grown crystal is found to be suitable for nonlinear optical and photonic applications. As of now, among the reported so far, the investigation of thermal parameters for SEST and SR method grown benzil single crystal is reported for the first time in the literature. |

Experimentation under dynamic shocked conditions has attained the status of one of the appealing classes of methods for identifying the functional materials whose degree of long-range order is significantly altered. In the present work, we have systematically investigated the dynamic impact of shock waves on the technologically important single crystal of sulfamic acid at various numbers of shocks exposed and the results have been analyzed by X-ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopic profiles. Based on the obtained results, the shocked phase profile with respect to the number of shock pulses is of the sequential order (Pbca)–disorder–order (Pbca)–disorder–order (Pbca) for the 0, 1, 2, 3 and 4 shocks, respectively. The observed switchable phase transitions of the titled crystal after shocked conditions might be due to the rotational order–disorder transformation that is followed by the molecular symmetry changes of NH3 and SO3 trigonal units for which the possible macroscopic mechanism is provided. The observed switchable phase transitions occurring between order and disorder states may be an interesting asset for molecular electronic devices such as the molecular switches. |

Copper sulphate pentahydrate (CSPH) single crystal is identified as an admirable material used for transmission UV optical filter and optical communication applications. CSPH crystal was grown via Sankaranarayanan and Ramasamy (SR) technique. The well quality and enhanced size of 80 × 13 mm2 single crystal was harvested in a 60 days period. The crystal has been utilized for dissimilar characterisations of UV–Vis NIR testing to identify the maximum transmission of 79% at 435 nm and EDAX analysis exhibits the elements present in the grown crystal. Mechanical analysis of CSPH single crystal result indicates that the soft material type. Thermo-gravimetric analysis and Differential thermal analysis (TGA/DTA) carry out the materials occurs different weight loss and stable point of the grown crystal. In this article, for the first time reported photoacoustic spectroscopy studies and it has been utilised to identify the grown crystal thermal transport properties. It is needed for optical and thermal related applications. The different characterization results show that the important advantages of the Ultra-violet filter and optical communication applications. |

In this article, we focus on shock wave impact, optical, chemical etching and thermal analyses of a few technologically sound crystals which have been reported for various constructive applications. Large-size organic, inorganic and semi-organic nonlinear optical single crystals were grown by the Sankaranarayanan–Ramasamy (SR) method to be utilized for different characterizations. UV–Visible spectroscopy was performed to identify the optical transmittance of the grown crystals to ensure their suitability for optical applications. The mechanical study was performed to determine the mechanical stability and the crystals are suggested for laser applications. Chemical etching was carried out to analyse the quality of the surface of the crystals that are recommended for nonlinear optical (NLO) application. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) was utilized to examine the thermal behaviour of the grown crystals such that they are proposed for a variety of applications such as ultraviolet transmitting filters, lasers, optical windows and microelectronics devices. |

L-tartaric acid (LTA) crystal has been extremely well established as an admirable material for the applications like an optical, piezoelectronic device, harmonic generation in nonlinear optics (NLO) and laser. This article is deliberated on good quality LTA single crystal which was grown via slow evaporation solution technique. The size of the grown LTA single crystal 25 × 15 × 10 mm3 has been collected for a growth period of 50 days. The grown crystal was utilized for photoacoustic spectroscopy (PAS), etching, micro-hardness, thermo-gravimetric analysis (TGA) and differential thermal analysis (DTA). The study of PAS is used to obtain the thermal diffusivity of a sample, and the observed result qualifies the crystal apt for optical and laser applications. TGA/DTA analysis for the grown LTA crystal comes out with good results, and it is suggested for electro-optical device applications. |

In this article, the authors demonstrate the experimental findings of the effect of dynamic shock waves on the crystallographic structural stability and the optical properties of L-tartaric acid (LTA) single crystal such that it has been characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction and UV–Visible spectroscopic techniques. To start with, seven identical title crystals have been examined against different number of shock pulses such as 3, 6, 9, 12, 15, 18, and 21, respectively, and the optical transmittance spectra of the pristine and shock-wave-exposed crystal samples have been recorded. The pristine, 12th and 21st shocked samples have been subjected to the single-crystal diffraction study so as to confirm the crystallographic structural stability at shocked conditions. According to the outcome of the optical results, there is no change in the absorption edge positions whereas considerable changes are observed in optical transmittance due to the surface morphological changes. Single crystal XRD data show that the test crystal could retain its original P21 space group even at the 21st shock pulse-loaded condition, and hence, it is suggested that LTA crystal could be a good fit for the applications of micro-electronic device fabrications. |

Dynamic supersonic shock waves have a very fascinating property of inducing phase transitions in materials, as is evident from the present research work. Despite much experimental and theoretical research work that has been carried out over the past 100 years on shock waves, which has brought about significant contributions to understanding the irreversible phase transition behaviour of materials under shocked conditions, the concept of switchable phase transitions, especially from the crystalline to amorphous as a result of dynamic shock waves, is not clearly understood. In the present framework, the authors reveal and present the novel results of a switchable phase transition occurring between the crystalline (C) and amorphous (A) phases in a nickel sulfate hexahydrate single-crystal triggered by dynamic shock waves under ambient conditions, thereby following the sequence of C–C–A–C–A–C–A–C–A when the number of shock pulses is 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, and 8, respectively. The observed results of the phase transition are convincingly reflected through diffraction, spectroscopic, and microscopic analyses. |

Lithium manganate (LM) has been extremely well established as a material for applications in electronic devices such as personal organizers, pagers, personal computers, facsimile machines, portable stereophonic equipment, and cellular phones. LM nanoparticles have been prepared via the sol-gel method through a stoichiometric quantity of Manganese acetate tetrahydrate, Lithium hydroxide monohydrate, and Citric acid anhydrous taken in 1:2:3 ratios. The calcination was done with the resulting powder samples at different temperatures of 600 °C and 700 °C. The LM powder samples were utilized for dissimilar characterizations for FTIR spectral analysis exhibiting the presence of functional groups. PXRD result illustrates that the "h, k, l" values are well matched by the earlier reported values. The dielectric properties are calculated at different temperatures from 50 °C to 350 °C. When the calcination temperature increases the conductivity of the sample also increases. The dielectric loss and dielectric constant confirm the normal dielectric behavior of the material. XPS results show the measured empirical formula, elemental composition, and electronic state of the elements in a material. Photoacoustic spectroscopy analysis of the title compound values makes it a promising material for Li-ion battery and electrical storage devices applications. |

In the present work, a good-quality nickel sulfate hexahydrate (NSH) single crystal measuring 30 × 20 × 15 mm3 was grown via a slow evaporation solution technique (SEST). NSH single crystal is an inorganic material and is widely used in optical applications, UV sensors, and missile detection systems, among others. The grown crystal was characterized using powder x-ray diffraction (PXRD), UV-visible spectroscopy, microhardness test and etching analysis. Photoacoustic spectroscopy (PAS) was used to identify the thermal diffusivity of the grown crystal. The thermal diffusivity of the NSH crystal was found to be superior to that of various common nonlinear optical (NLO) materials, and is thus suitable for use in optical and sensor applications. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) was utilized to determine the material decomposition at a certain temperature. Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and differential thermal analysis (DTA) were performed to identify the melting point of the grown crystal. The dielectric analysis showed that the crystal has low dielectric loss, fewer defects, and better optical properties, and is suitable for NLO applications. Thermal analysis showed that the grown crystal can be utilized for a wide array of applications including optical communications, UV bandpass filters, UV sensors, harmonic generation, and missile detection systems. |

Ammonium dihydrogen phosphate (ADP) crystal utilizes several applications such as Q-switching, electro-optical, and second harmonic generation in nonlinear optics. In the present article, a good-quality single crystal of ADP was grown via Sankaranarayanan–Ramasamy (SR) method for the dimension of 120 mm in length and 12 mm in diameter. The grown ADP crystal is used for diverse characterizations like FTIR spectral study, Vickers microhardness, second harmonic generation, photoluminescence, and chemical etching analysis. The photoacoustic spectroscopy analysis was used to study the thermal diffusivity of the sample. Thermal transport properties of the crystal are required for all types of heat transfer incidences and furthermore used in several applications like acousto-optical, Nd:YAG, and Nd:YLF lasers. A dielectric property was investigated for the grown crystal with dissimilar temperatures, and it was apt for electro-optical and Q-switching applications. |

Sulfanilic acid (SA) crystal has been very well established as an excellent material for the applications such as photonic, electro-optical and harmonic generation in non linear optics (NLO). This article is deliberated on good quality SA single crystal which has been grown by slow evaporation solution technique as it is a prominent NLO material. After the growth period of 95 days, a transparent SA single crystal has been collected with the dimension of 9 × 9 × 2 mm3. The grown crystal has been subjected to photoacoustic spectroscopy (PAS) and impedance analyses. The study of PAS has been utilized to find out thermal diffusivity and the observed result qualifies the crystal to be suitable for lasers and high temperature related applications. Impedance analysis has been implemented for the grown SA crystal for various values of temperature and it comes out with good results so that it could be a candidate for few applications in the field of microelectronic and electro-optical industries. |

In this article, the authors investigate the structural, thermophysical and dielectric properties of glycine phosphate (GPI) crystals for pre- and post-shock wave loaded conditions. The supersonic shock waves were generated by a table-top shock tube with corresponding Mach number of 1.7. The applied shock wave has 1.048 MPa transient pressure and 644 K temperature, respectively. The changes observed in the structural properties for pre- and post-shock loaded sample were confirmed using a powder x-ray diffractometer. Thermophysical properties such as thermal diffusivity, thermal conductivity and thermal effusivity were elucidated by photoacoustic spectrometer. The impedance analyzer is employed to determine the electrical properties and domain stabilities of the GPI crystal in the frequency range from 1 Hz to 1 MHz at ambient temperature. From this investigation we conclude that the GPI crystal can be used for devices that work in high vibration and extreme environments. |

Nickel sulphate hexahydrate (NSH) crystal is known to be an excellent material for UV light band-pass filter applications. In this research work, good quality and enhanced size of NSH single crystal has been effectively grown by implementing Sankaranarayanan—Ramasamy (SR) method. After a prolonged period of 185 days, a fine quality of transparent as well as improved size single crystal of NSH with dimension 220 mm in length and 12 mm in diameter has been successfully harvested. The grown crystal has been subjected to various characterizations as that of single crystal x-ray analysis to confirm the crystal system with unit cell parameters, UV–Vis analysis to know the transmission spectrum, FTIR spectral analysis to find out the functional groups and photoluminescence study to affirm the green emission of the crystal. NSH crystal falls into the category of soft material as identified by microhardness study and etching study confirms that it has good quality as the surfaces are almost free of defects. Photoacoustic spectroscopy has been utilized to find the thermophysical parameters. The resultant value of thermal diffusivity is compared with few other familiar nonlinear optical materials such that it is asserted by the observed superior value of NSH single crystal that it is an added advantage for band-pass filter and harmonic generation applications. |

Ammonium Dihydrogen Phosphate (ADP) and Potassium Dihydrogen Phosphate (KDP) crystals are grown by slow evaporation method at ambient temperature. The said crystals are utilized as a test specimen and subjected to one-dimensional ‘loading of shock waves’ generated by rupturing a paper diaphragm with Mach number of 1.9 using supersonic low energy table-top shock tube. Thermal diffusivity of crystal is measured using Photoacoustic spectrometer (PAS) for the normal and shock loaded crystals, thermal conductivity and thermal effusivity are computed for the given volumetric specific heat capacity of the crystals. XRD characterization studies reveals that KDP crystal has better immunity to shock wave than ADP crystal. |

Nonlinear optical sodium sulfanilate dihydrate (SSD) single crystal was grown by slow evaporation solution method at ambient temperature. Unit cell parameters were elucidated with the study of single crystal X-ray diffraction. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopic analyses were performed to indentify a variety of functional groups present in the grown SSD crystal. The level of optical transmittance of the grown SSD crystal was investigated by UV–Vis–NIR spectral analysis. The lower cut off wavelength of the grown crystal was observed at 243 nm and the band gap energy is found to be 5.23 eV. The spectral study of photoluminescence was carried out for the grown crystal which shows a sharp emission peak at 485 nm resulting blue–green emission that is suitable for the optical communication applications. Mechanical strength was measured by utilizing Vickers microhardness test and the value of n is found to be 2.25 asserting that the crystal belongs to soft material category. The dielectric properties were studied as a function of frequency at various temperatures and also the grown SSD crystal has been correlated with electro-optic properties. Thermogravimetric analysis was undertaken by a thermal analyzer with the temperature starting from 30 to 800 °C and TGA/DTA results show that the crystal has good thermal stability and useful for laser applications. Etching analysis also was performed for the grown SSD single crystal proving that it has good crystalline nature with fewer defects. |

Semiorganic material of bis-glycine cobalt sulphate pentahydrate (BGCS) was synthesized and single crystals of BGCS were grown by slow evaporation technique at room temperature. Three dimensional crystal structure of BGCS crystal elucidated by single crystal X-ray diffraction analysis reveals that the crystal belongs to triclinic system with centrosymmetric P-1 space group. Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectral analysis was carried out and the presence of various functional groups of BGCS were identified. UV–Vis–NIR spectral analysis of BGCS crystal shows that the crystal is transparent between the wavelengths 200 and 1100 nm. Vickers microhardness study of the BGCS was carried out. Dielectric constant and dielectric loss of BGCS crystal were measured in the frequency range of 50 Hz–2 MHz at room temperature. Thermogravimetric, differential thermal analysis and differential scanning calorimetric studies carried out for the BGCS single crystal revealed that the grown crystal is stable up to 214 °C. Thermodynamic parameter showed that the decomposition reaction of BGCS is non-spontaneous. Etching study was carried out on the surface of the crystal using double distilled water as etchant. Increase in the etching time from 10 to 15 s developed staircase shaped etch pattern. The thermal parameter of BGCS was calculated from photoacoustic spectroscopy. Antibacterial activity was carried out in-vitro against gram negative i.e. Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Salmonella typhi; gram positive bacteria Staphylococcus aureus. |

Abstract [+]
Organic nonlinear optical benzil single crystal of fine quality with the dimensions of 168 × 14 mm2 was successfully grown in (100) plane from saturated solution by unidirectional SR method. The structural identity of the grown crystal was confirmed by powder XRD. High-resolution X-ray diffraction analysis indicates the crystalline perfection of the grown benzil crystal. The optical analysis was carried out by UV–visible spectroscopy which shows that the benzil crystal’s cut off wavelength is 437 nm. The dielectric constant and dielectric loss of benzil crystal are found to be very much depending upon temperature and frequency. Ferroelectric nature of grown crystal was identified by P–E hysteresis analysis and to find the values of spontaneous polarization and coercive field. The laser damage threshold energy was studied with the help of Nd:YAG laser. The presence of third harmonic generation was identified by z-scan techniques. |

Thermal properties play a vital role particularly for the materials which are used in high power laser irradiation. Photoacoustic technique is very much feasible to findout the thermal transport properties of solid materials. In the present work, nonlinear optical (NLO) single crystal of L-tartaric acid (LTA) was grown by Sankaranarayanan-Ramasamy (SR) method for dimensions of 140 mm in length and 11.5 mm in diameter. The grown LTA crystal has been subjected to UV-Vis-NIR spectral study to analyze the optical transmittance and absorbance characteristics. The thermal characterization studies were performed using photoacoustic spectrometer (PAS). Thermal characterization involves measurement of thermal parameters such as thermal diffusivity, thermal effusivity, thermal conductivity and specific heat capacity. The experimental results of photoacoustic spectrometer show that the thermal diffusivity of LTA is higher than the reported values of a few other well known NLO materials. |

A nonlinear optical organic benzil single crystal with the size of 8 × 5 × 3 mm3 was grown via using slow evaporation solution technique. UV–visible spectrum study was taken for the grown crystal to identifying the optical transmittance. The lower “cut-off†wavelength of benzil crystal is established to be 258 nm. An FTIR spectral analysis was utilized to find the existence of functional groups. Dielectric analysis of the grown crystal makes it known for the little dielectric loss, smaller defects, and enhanced optical properties, and hence it is apt for optical applications. Microhardness study reveals the crystal becomes a soft material category. Chemical etching analysis was confirmed the crystalline surface quality. “Differential Scanning Calorimetry†was made use of to study the thermal performance of the benzil crystal and is proposed for photonic application. |

Zinc oxide (ZnO) is an expensive optical material that has received widespread attention because of tremendous applications such as tremendous applications such as transparent conductive contacts, solar cells, ozone sensor, laser diodes, ultraviolet lasers and thin film transistors. Mg doped ZnO nanoparticles are prepared by Precipitation Method. Doping of transition metal like Mg have been incorporated in order to improve the structural and optical properties of ZnO materials. Then the detailed characterization analyses have been done from XRD, FTIR, and SEM measurements to understand the structural properties of Mg doped ZnO. In addition the optical property has been understood from the UV-Vis investigation. |
