Exploring the Adoption of Agricultural Innovations in Rice Farming Sanghamitra Rajnandini Saikia In International Journal of Extension Education, Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu , Apr 2025, Volume: 20,(2), Page: 110-120.

Abstract [+]

This study explores the adoption of agricultural innovations in rice farming in Dhemaji district, Assam, examining the influence of socio-economic factors and adopter categories on innovation uptake. The findings show that the majority of farmers (54%) are aged between 36–50 years, with a male-dominated farming community (66.5%). Educationally, 39 per cent of farmers have completed higher secondary education and most live in joint family structures (55.5%). Income-wise, 34 per cent fall into the middle-income group, earning between ?2,00,001 and ?4,00,000 annually. Using Rogers' Diffusion of Innovation Model, the study reveals that 91.6 per cent of farmers are classified as Laggards, indicating a cautious approach to adopting new technologies, while Innovators (7.6%) prefer to wait for others to validate innovations. The adoption of specific innovations varies, with Integrated Weed Management (96.8%) and hybrid rice varieties (91.6%) being widely adopted, while innovations like the Super Bag for drying and storage (8.4%) had the lowest adoption rate. Adoption levels were mostly moderate (47.2%), with low adoption at 25.2 per cent and high adoption at 27.6 per cent. Chi-square analysis highlights significant associations between socio- economic factors such as age, gender, education and income with innovation adoption. Factors influencing adoption differed by adopter category, with financial capacity, extension services and social influence playing key roles. A majority (98%) of farmers emphasized the importance of initiatives like education, improved extension services and the creation of FPOs to enhance innovation adoption. In contrast, 78 per cent highlighted the need for a mindset change to overcome resistance to new practices, recognizing it as a gradual process requiring sustained efforts. The study emphasizes the need for tailored interventions from policymakers and extension agencies to foster innovation adoption, particularly by addressing specific needs across different adopter groups. Abstract [+] The eating habits of a community's residents have a big impact on the quality of life in that community. The types, quantity, and quality of food consumed are fundamentally referred to as dietary habits, and consumer demographics have a significant impact on these habits. This study examined the food consumption patterns and spending habits, both on food and non-food items, of female tea plantation workers in Salkathoni tea estate, Assam during the months of July and August in the year 2023. A purposive sample strategy was employed to select 100 women workers. A well-designed interview schedule was created to gather primary data via direct interpersonal interaction, while secondary data was acquired from journals, books, published papers, and websites. The study examined the dietary habits and spending patterns of female tea plantation workers in their everyday life. The study revealed that a significant majority of 22% of the respondents fell within the age category of 36-45 years. 54% respondents live in joint families. Educational levels are low, with 46% respondents are illiterate and 38% of the respondents attained minimal education. Most of the workers earn below 10,000 rupees per month. In terms of meal consumption pattern mainly consists of grains, pulses, and vegetables, with occasional non-vegetarian items. Cereals, pulses, and vegetables are daily staple food. Consumption of milk products, nuts, and green leafy vegetables are less common among the respondents. A substantial correlation between food and non-food consumption expenditures, with a significant relationship observed at the 1% level.
[2]	Living and Working Conditions of Women Tea Garden Workers in Assam Shikhamoni Gogoi In Journal of Extension Education, , May 2024, Volume: 35 (1), Page: 6969–6976. Abstract [+] estate workers hold a significant position in Assam, India. This study examines the socio-economic aspects of living and working conditions of workers, in the tea gardens of Sivasagar district, Assam. 50 women who work in tea plantations formed the sample. Findings revealed that the more than half of the women workers generate a monthly income of Rs. 5001 to Rs.7000 and due to low income, workers find difficulty to cover their daily expenditure. It was also found that the women workers at the tea plantations have poor working conditions such as forced labour, continuous work-load without rest and health issues.

Abstract [+] Assam has grown tea for 100 years. It began in Britain and continues today. Assam produces half of India’s tea. Women tea workers live in most of Assam’s remote districts (Baishya,2016).Assam’s GDP is 20% from tea plantations. Assam’s tea estates employ many Indians. These workers’ health is considerably lower than the state average for many reasons. These workers lack schools, latrines, adequate drinking water ,healthcare, and nourishment. The experiment was conducted between June and September 2022. Nambornadi Tea Estate in Assam was studied. Study used both primary and secondary data. A total of 75 women tea plantation workers were selected using simple random sampling and interviewed using a structured schedule. The Nambornadi tea estate management board, websites, magazines, and Assam Govt. archives provided secondary data. The study’s interview schedule included parts on respondents’ personal profiles, health, and health issues. Primary data was collected by observation and face-to-face dialogue

Tea is one of the most loved beverages in the world, and Assam is famous for its vast tea gardens that produce some of the finest tea. Behind every cup of tea, however, lies the untold story of the women who work tirelessly to bring it to our tables. These women form the backbone of Assam’s tea industry, yet their lives often remain hidden, full of challenges and struggles that deserve our attention.
This book aims to shed light on their daily lives, the hardships they endure, and their incredible strength. It is also an effort to understand their life style and, their health challenges they face in providing for their families.
For years, these women have worked long hours under the sun and rain, plucking tea leaves with care and precision. Their work is physically demanding and essential for the tea industry, yet they often earn low wages that barely meet their basic needs. Despite their significant contribution, they receive little recognition or support. At home, life does not get any easier. Most women live in small, overcrowded houses provided by the tea estates. These homes often lack basic necessities like clean drinking water, proper sanitation, and electricity. Such conditions make daily life a struggle and affect their overall well-being.
Health is another major challenge for these women. Many suffer from illnesses caused by poor living conditions, lack of proper nutrition, and the demanding nature of their work. Access to healthcare is often limited or unavailable, and awareness about health and hygiene remains low. These factors take a toll not only on the women but also on their families, creating a cycle of hardship that is difficult to break.
During our journey of researching and writing this book, despite their struggles, they show immense resilience and hope. They work hard to provide for their families and nurture their children, often at great personal sacrifice. Their determination and courage are truly inspiring.
This book is not just about highlighting problems—it is also about understanding and appreciating the lives, lifestyle and culture of these women. It is about recognizing their contribution to the tea industry and acknowledging their strength.
This book consists of four chapters. The first chapter describes the scenario of tea industry in India as a whole; the second chapter showcases the living and working conditions of women workers in Assam, challenges faced by them. The third chapter describes a few studies conducted by the authors in Assam. This chapter consists of primary data collected by the authors. The last chapter gives a brief general conclusion on the entire topic.
Hopefully, this book will be of great help to all its readers out there.
